(Some background: I’m going to visit at least two cities this summer for various events that have Transition initiatives, and I’m going to make an effort to say hi to them while I’m in the area. Currently on the list are Reno, NV, and the Lehigh Valley.)
I like meeting people, for all that I am not very good at doing the initial introduction - I never know quite what to say, and I’m pretty poor at small talk. I’d rather jump straight to intense discussion of problems and solutions and the state of things (or stories, stories are good too). And I like chapter-based organizations (I help run one under a different hat), because there are similar groups of people in a lot of places - it encourages cooperation and sharing ideas because the same ideas (with some localization) can/should be implemented all over the place, without anyone suffering from running out of stuff to do. Plus, chapters means that I feel comfortable interacting with this random group of people somewhere else - they have similar goals, we have something basic to talk about. Plus, the small talk doesn’t actually vanish, so a common organization can fill the hole.
I also like memorabilia, particularly if it’s attached to people and places (and stories!). And in visiting other Transition initiatives, I’d like to be able to give them something from TransitionPGH that is attached to a person and place and story. Hopefully, people will come visit us and do the same (and then we’ll have to figure out where to display things like this - a different discussion). And I have some ideas - felt pennants from old fabric come to mind - but I am not particularly craft-y, though I’m perfectly happy to learn, and I wondered if other folks had some ideas on this. I think my personal requirements are:
