Transition Potluck 2/4 Discussion Notes

Here's the notes from the lively discussion last Saturday: there were three topics, and about 15-20 people total at the discussion. There was not enough DDR, but there was plenty of food and intellectual inter-rest. Notes are a bit rough, but hopefully useful.

Transition Structure, Nonprofit Status, Forming Connections with Other Groups

Latif: PCSI & Op. Better Block helped him figure out where to go for T4T. RACE organization too, Turkish. RACE: improving lives: green environments, reducing crime, etc.

Meg: payment? Volunteer org only?

Meg & Suzanne—making things visible; showing people where stuff is

Meg: registering all the individuals and organizations—a registry, a tool. Someone had to do neighborhood assessments, they had to compile it. Possibility for us? (Found out Pittsburgh Garden Experiment is doing something very similar already. Education—specific strategy—educating around sustainable causes. Targeting kids? No? Yes? Daniel Wade is doing that in Hazelwood.

Composting, Clean Water Activism

Jim: Interesting side conversation about composting

Mike: Who's my councilman?

Meg: Cory O Connor?

Mike: Handout @ floridation—documenting via Cds, fliers, pamphlets

Meg: what are the major plans of people who are higher-ups in water? Figuring that out.

Meg: Rachel Carson organization is one.

Tosha: Can verify anything that is public information due to her work with Parks & Rec.

Sustainable Housing

Lee: Green housing with green elements.

Meg: One person coordinating to find people, getting rent free?

Mike: work to earn rent?

Lee: community garden with connections to nonprofit world, getting money there—that he doesn't want, he wants it to be self-financed and the tenants to be responsible for taking advantage of flexibility with farming & green construction $100,000 with a bunch of organizations involved

Lee + Mike + Meg: that's totally Landslide Community Farm!
