Caroline Savery commented on Justin Thakar's event '1/13-1/15 Training For Transition with Tina Clarke, Kingsley Association, East Liberty'
I'm thrilled to hear of this training and I commend the Kingsley Association for their fresh approach to the training.  I wish I could participate, but I have several barriers to participating: lack of capital for the training fee, lack of…

If you're interested in Guerilla Gardening and start-up Community Gardening efforts, here's a group for you. I, Justin Thakar, will be cataloging, here and on my TransitionPGH.org blog, what I will have learned and a list of resources I will have compiled.I've already been talking to my apartment neighbors about doing some collaborative container/balcony gardening, splitting the produce and such--and I'll be putting up invites on everyone's doors to see if they're interested. That's material…See More

The unique and new aspect of this upcoming Transition Training—Larimer, East Liberty, and Homewood and "facilitating the creation of action plans and mutually-supportive relationships that will build resilience in these three neighborhoods"—was previously understated due to outdated descriptions. Use the link to the flier below and you'll find the most detailed and up-to-date info so far: http://tinyurl.com/7kwrpmvUpdated info from email on training:We welcome all who would like to attend this…See More

Profile Information

What changes would you like to see in your community?
Imagine stalking elk past department store windows and stinking racks of beautiful rotting dresses and tuxedos on hangers; you'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life, and you'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. Jack and the beanstalk, you'll climb up through the dripping forest canopy and the air will be so clean you'll see tiny figures pounding corn and laying strips of venison to dry in the empty car pool lane of an abandoned superhighway stretching eight-lanes-wide and August-hot for a thousand miles.

Pittsburgh Garden Experiment 2/5 Planning Meeting Notes

Lots of good stuff discussion happened , both within Jeff's Work Day group (which I was in) and in the reconvening meeting, where each smaller group shared its thoughts with the larger one. Notes are rough, as will probably be usual, but hopefully useful

 Rick: Discussion groups:

  • something monthly, perhaps on Sunday afternoon

  • How do I save seeds? How do I start gardens? How do I start technical processes to get that…

Transition Potluck 2/4 Discussion Notes

Transition Structure, Nonprofit Status, Forming Connections with Other Groups

Latif: PCSI & Op. Better Block helped him figure out where to go for T4T. RACE organization too, Turkish. RACE:…

OccupyPGH Community-Building Lessons: Part 1

OccupyPGH is an experiment in community-building, small-group resilience--and like any good set of sterile, lab-coated scientists, they've got their successes, failures, and work-arounds. This is what I've learned from talking to people at Mellon Green who have kept that experiment ongoing:

The consensus decision-making model can be tedious but nonetheless fruitful. I am told I can Google it and find something similar to the 8-ish steps they're using; also…

Volunteering Days at Urban Gardens: 11/5 and 10/29

Keep learning things in this Transition venture, about people around Pittsburgh and the personalities driving change forward. Why not keep a public journal of experiences, see if others find the things I've been seeing as interesting as I do?

Well, first entry time: farm days--would like people to see the kinds of wonderful experiences one can have at these things. This'll be a more or less direct copy of what I put in the Meetup…
