Greetings from Totnes! Researching Inner Transition

Hey PGH family,I've been living and studying just outside of Totnes - the first Transition Town in the world - for the past 6 months and getting involved with some interesting projects with both Transition Town Totnes and the international Transition Network. It has been really amazing seeing where this all began and working alongside some of the creative minds who dreamed it all up.Something some colleagues of mine at Schumacher College are working on is collecting stories and information…See More

July 29, 2011 at 7pm to July 30, 2011 at 12am
Unfortunately the time has come and we will be leaving this wonderful place. Please come to our place to spend one last amazing night together before Chris leaves for England and Richa (hopefully) leaves for Africa. Plus we will be letting you take things home with you.. furniture, kitchen stuff, clothes, and free hugs! Did we mention it's also a potluck and a BYOB? We will provide some snacks and drinks (need to use the last of our food stamps!!!) and have a small grill if you're interested in…See More

Big Idea Bookstore Member Drive -- Black Tie Event This Saturday! at Big Idea Book Store

July 30, 2011 at 8pm to July 31, 2011 at 12am
As you might know, the Big Idea Bookstore, now in its tenth year of operations, is about to close its doors at 504 S. Millvale Ave in Bloomfield. But fret not! We are reopening in a larger, brighter, happier and more air-conditioned space just around the corner at 4812 Liberty Ave. Not only that, we've reorganized our business model and we are now proudly a worker-owned cooperative. Yours truly owns 17% of the new business, and we're expanding our services: In addition to books + zines, we'll…See More

Sust Enable, Evolver and Transition Pittsburgh: Sustainability Jam! at Luke Manor

July 14, 2011 from 7pm to 9pm
For the last 50 years, throw-away consumer culture has led citizens of industrialized societies to forget many of the basic survival skills that have sustained humans for generations. Today, the impending challenges of peak oil and climate change leave our communities susceptible to the shocks and instability of centrally distributed hierarchical systems for life support. Facing the prospect of a world with drastically reduced access to energy and material goods, a rising network of Transition…See More

July 6, 2011 from 7pm to 9:30pm
A Gift Circle is a local economic solution and a creative way of building community, interconnecting everyone's gifts and needs--whether it be a gift of a used bicycle or the need of someone throat-singing for you, there's a good chance there'll be something delightful for you here. Here is a testimonial from our recent Gift Circle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xzbeja_qOs4 And here is an essay explaining…See More

Tactical Urbanism: Small scale efforts producing long-term change

I recently came across a fascinating case study of some short-term, low-risk local actions to creating more livable and resilient streets. From Guerrilla Gardening to Chair Bombing to Street Vendors/Food Trucks, community activists and citizens around the country are coming up with innovative, creative and engaging ways of producing change on a human-scale. Some of these things are probably being done in Pittsburgh now. I know they definitely all could be. I highly recommend that anyone…See More

Hi Chris,

I teach at Pitt on Tuesday nights -- getting online with this movie group is my first participation. I have some ideas and enthusiasm but am not really very available until after term ends, then I'm gone for a month -- but I will bring it up with the Stillpoint community, I think they would be happy to host sometime. Did you attend last night?
