What changes would you like to see in your community?
Better public transit - less parking, more light rail. Schools good enough that people don’t feel the need to live elsewhere and commute. More benches in public spaces.

Demographic Survey

In an effort to revitalize and grow TransitionPGH’s impact (because the news on climate change continues to look Not Good), we’d like to know more about you, our community. Primarily, we’d like to know what neighborhoods you spend time in, and whether you’d be interested in helping out as a volunteer (we have lots of things we’d like to do). We’ve got a quick survey to help us with this, and filling it out would be tremendously helpful. Thanks!…See More

Greenfield Neighborhood Walks Recap

On Tuesday August 7th we had our first Neighborhood Walks event in Greenfield, a neighborhood on the southern tip of Pittsburgh’s East End. The goals were to give people (hopefully neighbors, but we weren’t restrictive) a chance to meet, to walk around and see the neighborhood from a slower and different point of view, and collect ideas for a vision for the neighborhood. …See More

Free Solar Training Course this Fall at CCAC

The CCAC is hosting the next run of a renewable energies training course this fall, which covers a bunch of technologies and some of the technical training to install them: This program provides a free technical education to individuals who meet the prerequisites. The prerequisites are an interview and assessment to qualify for the program. We use the TABE test, which test basic adult education in math and reading at about the 9th/10th grade levels. Remediation will be provided to students…See More

Localizing 'In Transition 2.0'

The new Transition Network movie has been out for a while now, and I’ve gotten a chance to see it and show it a few times. Whenever I show IT 2.0, I love to localize it at the end, which goes as follows:- The Hill District has a time bank/community owned business, the Ujamaa Collective- The East End Brewing Company did a community loan program (0% interest, mostly paid back in beer) to finance their move to a bigger brewery- In…See More

Steering Meeting Results - Goals and Organization

On Saturday, July 7th, we had a steering meeting to plan out what TransitionPGH (T.PGH) should do, in the context of both the history of similar organizations and the plethora of groups in Pgh. We had eight people come and add to the discussion, with three major outcomes:A series of goals, focused around outreach, education, and training, but also with the key intention of T.PGH providing an overarching vision to projects and groups that we work with, and a connection to larger issues such as…See More

Summer Reskilling & Repair Workshop

So, in case you don’t know (because we didn’t really announce it), I’m nominally the Education Director for TransitionPGH, at least for the next 6 months to a year. What does this mean? It means I’m in charge of putting together events like movie screenings, and for connecting ‘people who want to know things with people who already know them’. It also means that I can pursue the idea of reskilling events (something I’m super excited about) - learning skills that our grandparents knew that we…See More

OK! Well good luck getting back here, and I'll drop a line your way when you're home. :-) Not sure if you owe me lunch. Can't remember. We'll work it out, I'm sure!

Hey there, Alex! It would be fun to hang out sometime soon - just to hang out and catch up on all you've been doing. Are you back in Pgh yet?

See you soon - whenever we can figure it out. :-)

Cheerio,

Mark

(I’m an obsessive person about websites - the new design is much cleaner, and I like the logo a lot - like, enough to want to print it on things, and pay for them.)

Well yea, of course - we just haven’t been ‘friends’ on this site. I think my posting activity remains in the top 5 on the site (though there isn’t a meter to check that). The new design is much improved, btw - though the About Us page could use some links. The other suggestion that I’d have is to do some adjustment to the settings for what shows up on the front page - I’d hide the ‘XX joined Transition Pittsburgh’ posts, and see whether you can let the summaries use some actual formatting (I always type paragraphs that get mashed together, and links don’t work). Finally, on the note of additional static content, is it possible to add a brief section at the top of the front page with a 1-para welcome statement?
