Why I Believe in Transition[PGH]

(This is a cross-post from my personal blog, and I’d love to see others’ thoughts on the same question of why they are part of the Transition movement.)There are a lot of frameworks for improving things out there – organizations, frameworks, networks. I’ve looked at a lot of them over the years (many are mentioned in this post), but I am increasingly convinced that the one I stand behind the most is this one - Transition. TransitionPGH is…See More

Potential projects?

Thumbnail
This group has the potential to start some great projects and transform into one or more working groups. In the interests of such things happening, my thinking is that we should figure out a starting project. Topics are economy, energy, transportation and building, and my personal criteria would be:Physical permanent or semi-permanent change to somethingLabor intensive is better than material intensivePartnering with other groups for knowledge or community interaction is greatCost: <$2000So,…See More

Update: I have the books, and I’ll bring them to the meeting this Tuesday. The final cost is $21, and I have one for both of you, Justin and Elisa.

As an update: I got a bunch of signups from Pitt’s Free the Planet group last night, so I’m going to order a case. Between them, Justin, and myself, I’ve got 11 copies accounted for out of 14 in a box, leaving three extras for…

Transition Companion Bulk Order - Interested?

Hey All - community question. The new Transition Companion is out (320 full color pages of Transition-y goodness), and I would like to get a copy. I figured some others might want one too, and there are some nice discounts on bulk orders (normally 29.95, in bulk 21ish or less). So, two questions:1.) Has anyone already ordered a bunch so that I could buy one off of you?2.) Who else would be interested - if we can get at least 10 people, I’ll front the money to order a case of 14 and bring them…See More

Local Mechanic Recommendations?

Hi All,I have a 2005 Mazda 3 which needs the standard set of service every year. I have been taking it to Pep Boys out of simplicity, but would like to find a reputable and preferably amiable mechanic who could do inspections and basic service while keeping the money local. Anyone have any recommendations? (Other than getting rid of the car - that’s not much use as an answer to the question at hand, though it’s in long term plans). Thanks,AlexSee More

Hey Alex, Very glad to hear your background and interests! Unfortunately, I'm just on the verge of leaving Pittsburgh to continue my studies in the UK, but I fully agree that the work Transition PGH is doing needs a technical aspect as well. If…

Alex, I'm with you. My skills are not technical -- I'm a writer and a zen priest -- but the work you want to focus on is also what interests me about Transition (along with local organic garden/farming). Thanks!

The Technical Side of Transition (and a Hello!)

Hello digital community!  My name is Alex, and I’ve been a member on this website since near its inception, and aware of TransitionPGH for similar measures. I’ve not been particularly good at actively participating in the community, though, via running several other digital spaces, I should know better. I’m working on changing that.  It’s worth saying that I’m an Engineer (we can discuss the validity of labelling others, but self-labelling has always seemed both valid and really important for…See More

Sust Enable, Evolver and Transition Pittsburgh: Sustainability Jam! at Luke Manor

July 14, 2011 from 7pm to 9pm
For the last 50 years, throw-away consumer culture has led citizens of industrialized societies to forget many of the basic survival skills that have sustained humans for generations. Today, the impending challenges of peak oil and climate change leave our communities susceptible to the shocks and instability of centrally distributed hierarchical systems for life support. Facing the prospect of a world with drastically reduced access to energy and material goods, a rising network of Transition…See More

What changes would you like to see in your community?
Better public transit - less parking, more light rail. Schools good enough that people don’t feel the need to live elsewhere and commute. More benches in public spaces.
