Stranger in a Strange Land

I finished Stranger in a Strange Land the 15th of September.  What I remembered from reading it forty plus years ago was meager: only the phrases “Water, brother.  May you never thirst,” the…Continue

Hi Julie -- I just finished the "Uncut" Stranger in a Strange Land" so let me know when you are ready and your wishes as far as getting together to share responses.   I emailed you an invitation a few weeks ago  -- never received a response.  So I hope you get this.

Okay, so the public library had 2 copies on the shelf, and I grabbed one. Rosemary and I are now, apparently, a book club of two. When's a good time for a teaparty? I'm thinking 4pm or evening... not too much firmly on my schedule for the next two weeks. Pick a day?

Good.  I have ordered a copy from the Carnegie Library of the later edition.  It's about 100 pages longer than the first.  I think maybe if we get the book(s) in September we can meet in October.  I will start reading immediately.  I think I will order the other edition too (early 1960s). The CLP has quite a few copies.  Bye for now.  Rosemary

I'd love to read it - not sure whether I've read that one before or not. I'll volunteer my little studio apartment for a Book Club Kickoff tea party, if people are interested. I might need a week or two to get it in decent shape for tea partyin' though. My laziness + houseguests = dirty apartment. :(

Hey book club members!  I am going to re-read Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land originally published in the early 1960s. It's been called one of the most significant "science fiction" books of all time.   The first published version was heavily edited.  After Heinlein's death in 1988 an unedited version was published. I have not read this.  If anyone is interested in taking this up with me, let me know.

May 18 is good for me.  Let's do it earlier rather than later. I agree everyone should bring their recommendations to the first meeting and then form a plan from the wishes of those present.

I'm thinking about hosting a gathering where everyone brings a fav book, a book their currently reading or a book they'd like to read (you could also just share information about the book if you do not have it). Then people could collect around the book(s) they are interested in and plan discussion groups from there. I'm thinking wed 5/18. thoughts?

So I’m around this summer and looking at doing some book/discussion club activities with Pitt students, and figured I’d extend the invitation to TransitionPGH folks. My reading list for the summer is here, and there’s some overlap with the TUS list - though I admit that I’m not as interested in reading spiritual texts for this (I’ve read the Bhagavad Gita in the past though). I tend to do book discussion around Pitt’s campus, but there are some nice parks going East that would also do nicely.

The Bhagavad Gita (meaning "The Song of God") is a section of the Mahabharata, said to be the longest poem in the world. The Gita is considered the basic Hindu sacred text, even though the Mahabharato is a family saga. It is very short.  Millions of people have memorized it.  I recommend we take it up and see how its wisdom from twenty-five centuries ago applies to us and what we seek in Transition.
