Gift Circles Ripple Out!

Transition Pittsburgh wants all gift givers and gift receivers to create a Gift Circle ripple effect in our neighborhoods as Phase Two.  (Phase One was successfully establishing Gift Circles in Peaceburgh, thanks largely to the loving enthusiasm and follow-through of Kevin May.)  You all are needed as ripplers.  We had many faithful scribes, and we will contact all those who have attended Gift Circles to invite them to join this on-line group. Please spread the word and share your ideas and comments. Thanks.  Rosemary

How do I start a gift circle for my group? 2 Replies

Hi everyone, I love the idea of a gift circle(I have never been a part of one though).  I am an organizer for GreenPittsburgh, a Meet Up group which is really a social place for like minded people to…Continue

I just figured out that on the Group page you can go all the way to the bottom of the first page and then press 2 and Go to get to the next page.  I didn't see that before.

Chad, One person has responded that they want to come to the gift circle, but have no idea what that means! I'm copying the links you've provided and sharing those in addition to the blurb you provided. Thanks again and I look forward to meeting you on Sept. 12.

Rosemary, I have no idea why you are having a problem with these being listed on the home page, but from my perspective, the more exposure, the better!

There seems to be a problem with posting here or on the Transition home page. I get notified that someone has responded to Gift Circles but it is posted on the home page.   I'm delighted with the interchanges since this began ten days ago.

I hope the Monroeville event will achieve the goals Chad named.  Let's observe it as a pilot project from which we can learn as we ripple out.

That is superb, Chad! Well said. The ONLY thing I would add, if you don't mind me saying so, is: "Come join us while we build friendships.." Just seems to flow a little better, but only change it if you agree!!!!! ; } It could really work either way.

It doesn't have to be vegetarian...most I attend are I think largely because of the high % of vegetarians in attendance.  As for the blurb:

Come join us build friendships, community resilience, and economic self-sufficiency at the Gift Circle. As we share our needs and gifts with each other we are able to discover and utilize untapped resources within our community, effectively turning one person's unused asset into another person's treasure.  This creates more abundance for everyone in the community to enjoy while also cutting waste and unnecessary consumption.

For some reason that last response from you just became visible to me. Thanks. Six o'clock will be a pot luck. Any specifications for that? Local food when possible. Is vegetarian a necessitiy for any reason? Let me know that detail and then I'll post on the Sustainable Monroeville facebook and web site, the Transition Pittsburgh facebook and web site and possibly the 1317 East Carson and Schwartz Market sites too. Nothing wrong with cross pollination...Please provide me with a few line blurb for the gift circle to broadcast. Thanks.

Chad, An orientation about gift cirlcles will be fine or we have the room in the downstairs program room from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, so we can take three hours if you'd like with a pot luck. None of the folks on stormwater management have gotten back to me so the whole meeting can be dedicated as a Gift Circle if you'd like. Let me know what you prefer and I will start the PR for the meeting on September 12.

Thanks again and again. Elisa

Elisa, I say let's go for it.  If people would attend, a potluck at 6 would be great.  Then we can start promptly at 7.. and 1.5-2 hours will be plenty of time to finish the circle.  Then, if they wish, people can make further connections after the library closes.

Justin, I love your insights.  Having a logo is great and the flier idea is gold.  Great work. Many Thanks.

Interesting. I have not been to a gift circle myself so the idea of you speaking at this next meeting introducing the ideas would be great...On the other hand, we could just go for it. I have not heard anything from the stormwater folks so that can be postponed. We have the room reserved from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The meetings are called for 7 to 8:30 PM, but very often folks chat until the library closes at 9 pm and then out in the parking lot following the meeting...

So, we could begin at 6:00 PM with a pot luck , or not. Chad, Let me know your choice and I'll go with it. Elisa

  • We've got a logo for Transition branded Gift Cricles in development by Jared Blumer.
  • Fliers would be the next step. Put 'em on bulletins, above water fountains, in gyms, libraries, telephone poles, etc. Bring fliers to Gift Circles, ask people to put them up in their communities. Ask people to donate staplers, tape.
  • Later: bookmarks, handouts, a la Evolver's Interweave event?
  • Potentially put that on a Transition explanation/advertisement for events
  • Perhaps a gift circle flyer, exclusively-oriented?
