Hi everyone,

I love the idea of a gift circle(I have never been a part of one though).  I am an organizer for GreenPittsburgh, a Meet Up group which is really a social place for like minded people to get together to share ideas and skills.  I think that a gift circle would really bring the group together and help us feel more like our group is doing something tangible and accountable to help the world that we live in.  Any suggestions on how to get it started?

Thanks!

Let me know if any of this is helpful:

We've got space on Thursday or Monday evenings at the First United Methodist Church (in Shadyside) that we're not always using, at least not for the moment. I say we let you use it! (I personally don't see why not). But, yeah, that's important, a location, of course. Heck, just ask a local church you know that you'd like to partner with, give 'em the pitch. Or library. Or a place like Kingsley Association, where we've gotten a bit of an audience as well. Some of us probably have the ability to help ya'll out with one.

It's not bad if each circle is max 15 people. For each, we usually have a Scribe to write down wants and offerings and "I-intend-to-do-this" for later emailing, and maybe a Timer to force people (and the meeting) to not go on too long (usually an hour's good). And then you need someone to explain things at the beginning, tell everyone the format of the thing (how you go around the circle each telling your wants, in an allotted time, and then the offerings, and then the intentions.

And I suppose you need the demand for one of these things. You been asking people around you whether they'd find this sort of thing useful? Stirring up support and attendees?

Thank you Justin.

I actually haven't spoken to my group about it yet.  I wanted to make sure that I was going to be able to plan and hold this kind of event before I jumped in with both feet.  :)  I am currently working on my "3 months no purchases pledge"  - part of why this sparked my interest.

In my group we have 94 casual members who get the emails and sometimes show up, and about 10 devoted members who come to nearly everything so I am not sure that we would go over the 15 person max.

Is this something that you hold as recurring event?  Once a week? Once a month?  I think that your space in Shadyside would be perfect, but I am sure that sooner or later we would need our own space.  :)  Thank you for offering it.  Also, can I stop in for one that you guys do to see how it works in action?

Thanks again for all of your help.
